How to Shut Off the Water in a Plumbing Emergency (Idaho Homeowner Guide)
The most important thing you can do in a plumbing emergency is stop the water. Every Idaho homeowner should know where these valves are before they need them.
The main shut-off valve
Look where the water line enters the house: a basement or crawl space wall facing the street, a utility room, or near the water heater. It is a round wheel (turn clockwise several times) or a lever handle (turn a quarter turn so it is perpendicular to the pipe). If you cannot find it, there is a second valve at the meter in the ground near the street that needs a meter key.
Fixture shut-offs
Toilets and sinks have small oval valves on the supply lines beneath them. Washing machines have two valves behind the unit. Turn clockwise to close.
The water heater
Turn the cold inlet valve on top of the tank clockwise. For gas heaters, turn the gas control to "off." For electric, switch off the breaker. If the tank is leaking, see water heater replacement.
